In a recent interview with Japanese newspaper and website Asahi Shinbun, Nintendo CEO Tatsumi Kimishima revealed that Nintendo is planning on getting into the movie business sooner than we thought.
In the Japanese article, translated to English (thanks to Kyle McLain over on twitter), Nintendo plans to have it’s first movie, based on it’s historically famous video game characters, ready for release within the next 2-3 years. It’s also said the company is looking at a production system where they can do as much as they can to develop these movies in-house.
We first heard of Nintendo moving into the movie business as early as last year as part of the company’s plans to utilise it’s characters in different mediums. Nintendo is reportedly betting big on these movies as it’s said they are moving to sell their stake in the Seattle Mariners baseball team to finance their movie plans.
The article also reports that Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Super Mario Bros and other iconic Nintendo franchises, is set to be involved with the development of these upcoming films. Who’s excited now? I sure am.
