‘Psychonauts 2’ Announced: Seeks Crowdfunding

Fans of the PS2 cult-classic Psychonauts, rejoice! Tim Schafer, the industry legend that brought gamers  Brutal Legend, Grim Fandango, and Broken Age,  has officially confirmed the production of Psychonauts 2.

The game, which was released in 2005 as the first project from Schafer’s then newly formed company, Double Fine Productions, received overwhelmingly positive critical reception. Despite selling under 500,000 units in its first five year cycle, Psychonauts won titles such as E3 2005’s Best Original Game, IGN 2005’s Best Platformer, and Best Writing at the Game Developers’ Choice Awards in 2006. Psychonauts acquired a cult-following at its release and that fervor has only expanded in the past five years.

With the expiration of publishing rights from the game’s initial publishing company, Majesco, in 2011, Double Fine was able to digitally re-released Psychonauts for popular gaming marketplaces such as Steam and Xbox Live. This move helped sales more than double, with roughly 1.2 million units sold since 2011. More and more people have become fans of the game, eagerly awaiting the day when Double Fine Productions would confirm the release of a sequel.

That day, December 3rd, 2015, finally came.

In order to turn this long-awaited dream into a reality, the project is seeking $3.3 Million from crowdfunding, along with other financial support from investors. The project is being managed through Fig, and has already garnered $1.5 million since this publication.

Find out more about this project in Schafer’s Fig Campaign Pitch video below. You can check out Psychonauts 2’s crowd funding page here, with various levels of rewards for donating!
