Every ‘Gears of War’ Game to Come Free via Backwards Compatibility in ‘Ultimate Edition’

Those who may have missed out on the Gears of War franchise can soon get their fix on the entire series. Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, a visual revamp of the series’ first game launching Aug. 25, will come with every game in the series through Xbox One’s backward’s compatibility feature.

The includes games are the original Gears of WarGears of War 2Gears of War 3 and Gears of War: Judgment (review). This deal will last from launch day to Dec. 31, but it appears you don’t necessarily have to own Ultimate Edition. It must simply be played through Xbox Live within the given time frame for the games to be unlocked.

The four games will not immediately be available to players though. Instead, they can be played when the backwards compatibility update launches sometime this fall. Those who are part of the preview program may also test out the first Gears of War through backwards compatibility beginning today.

A deluxe version of Ultimate Edition was recently announced. Check out some footage of Ultimate Edition’s multiplayer beta and read more on Xbox One’s backwards compatibility here.
