Killing is Not Required in Thief + The Advantages of DualShock 4

During a Q&A session with the official PlayStation Blog, Producer Stephane Roy has revealed new details regarding Square Enix’s reboot title, Thief.

First of all, true to its nature, the upcoming Thief won’t force players to kill anyone, if they’re so inclined. The game will support both the “ghost” player, and the more aggressive one.

The player always has the choice of how they approach a situation, and we make sure the game doesn’t restrain them. Every mission supports both the ghost player, who wants to play without killing anyone, without being seen, and the predator, who wants to use the shadow to quickly dispatch enemies.

Secondly, Roy also mentioned the use of the DualShock 4, and how it’ll enhance the experience for PlayStation 4 gamers.

For the DualShock 4, we use the light bar […] which indicates if Garrett is in the shadows or not. It creates a nice feeling when you play in the dark to see it illuminate or darken as you move through the environment.

Additionally, the touch pad allows for better menu navigation and makes for a more intuitive way to perform various actions, like navigating the map or selecting weapons.

Thief will also use older features introduced via DualShock 3, such as the motion controls, which, for example, will help players better aim with their bow. Lastly, DualShock 4’s most noticeable feature, the “share” button, will also be put to good use.

We give a lot of freedom to the player, and we work really hard to create a systemic AI that will let the player find creative ways to play. Sharing those moments will showcase how they solved various situations.

Thief is scheduled to come out of shadows in January 27th, 2014, on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC. You can also pre-order the game for an exclusive mission. You can find more details on that, here.
