Xbox One Will Cut Features As Well As Cut DRM

In the wake of the complete one-eighty of cutting DRMs from its newest console, Microsoft has announced it will also has to cut key features such as game sharing from the Xbox One.

Xbox One Console

Marc Whitten, vice president of Xbox Live explained to Kotaku “There’s a few things we won’t be abe to deliver as a result of this change. One of the things we were very excited about was ‘wherever we go my games are already with me.’ Now, of course your physical games won’t show up that way. The games you bought digitally will. You’ll have to bring your discs with you to have you games with you.”

“The sharing library [is what] we won’t be able to deliver at launch.”

This all means Microsoft will no longer allow gamers to share their games with their family members anymore, Xbox One games will be tied to one user. Of course, players will be able to trade their games but players will no longer be able to share their saved games. The other ditched feature is the player will no longer be able to download their library of games to another console.

Xbox One Controller

This is a huge change for Microsoft in both policy and structure of the console itself. With the change in its DRM policy, it’s clear Microsoft wasn’t planning to have to change these features. Microsoft also confirmed to Kotaku a day one patch will have to be downloaded to implement these changes. Does this mean the Xbox One will still function with the DRMs as planned until the patch rolls out though?

What’s also evident is that Microsoft has completely misunderstood how connectivity works with its users today. With the previous announcements of DRMs, it was quite clear the consumer wasn’t ready for them.

With these changes now set to occur, does this mean the playing field between the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 will now be level?
