Challenging RPG? Dark Souls, meet Lords of the Fallen…

Back in August of 2012, City Interactive pulled the curtain on their mystery title previously referred to as “Project RPG.” While the codename is among the most uninspired titles in recent memories, it was unveiled to be an Action RPG called Lords of the Fallen. While the name sounds like something straight out Transformer’s mythos, the game is actually more akin to a medieval fantasy a la Witcher or Dark Souls. Basically, my kind of game. However, what kind of game is this going to be? It has been a little under a year since any solid information, however a recent interview between Eurogamer and Exective Producer Tomasz Gop has provided some much desired information on the game.

That being said, the same piece of concept art shown almost a year go is all that is available still; hopefully some in-game screens become available in the near future. Until then, behold (or refresh your memory) with this!

Lords of the Fallen - Concept Art

Here is a synopsis of news unveiled by the interview:

  • Previously reported to be on PC and current-gen consoles; LotF will only be available on the PC, PS4 and the next Xbox. 
  • The game strives to be challenging in its own way – akin to The Witcher and Dark Souls.
  • Skills trees will be present, similar to Borderlands.
  • The game is around 2 years development come September.
  • City Interactive will publish, while Deck 13 will develop. Team size is roughly 40 and growing.

Lets start off with the history behind the publisher and developer. Publisher City Interactive isn’t exactly beaming with a tremendous portfolio; their most recent game was Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2, which was met with mixed feelings. Similarly, the german developer Deck 13 doesn’t quite have a penchant for making the most brilliant titles. Its most recent title released was Venetica which was…well awful. Does this mean LotF should be tossed aside?  Consider this. Prior to Dark Souls, developer From Software had been in somewhat of a funk; the famed developer behind the Armored Core series had be putting out mediocre titles (at best) for a number of years. Their last hit title prior to Demon’s Souls was arguably Otogi and Otogi II in the early 2000s. (For the record, I am a huge fan of Chromehounds) Am I saying that Deck 13 is going to make a similar statement with Lords of the Fallen? Hell No. But I think they are more than capable of turning a few heads.

In hopes to fuel that dangerous optimism some more, note that the former Senior Producer for Witcher 1 and 2, Tomasz Gop is Executive Producer for LotF. While that shouldn’t reassure anyone that this game is going to assuredly become a hit, it instantly gives the development team more credibility.

The interview with Gop also goes into detail about the developer’s approach to gameplay. Gop mentions the general feel for the game and quite frankly, it strikes me very familiar…

“It’s a challenging game, action RPG, which means a lot of advanced combat,” he explained. “When you walk through a location, and you have to fight 10 enemies, that takes around an hour.” While this obviously screams Dark Souls, perhaps even Dragon’s Dogma, also throws Borderlands in the mix. Skill trees will meet with medieval trial-and-error gameplay; can’t possibly have been done before. Furthermore, he mention the game will be mainly single player with “online-ish” feature. Come now sir, you are leaving “inspired” territory here. In all seriousness though, I am glad to see other companies trying out this formula in more of their games, if not because the genre itself is popular at the moment, but because competition drives innovation. And that is a very good thing in the gaming industry.

While this great news to my ears, no gameplay footage has been shown as of yet, nor screenshots. And as with any game, concept and execution are to entirely different things. Still, it is interesting the amount of games that are looking to now jump on the Dark Souls train. (Sadly, the term “Soul Train” was already taken). I welcome it though, because the aspects that make these type of games so memorable are embedded in proper execution one what Gop says. The ability to have players fight ten enemies and have it take close up to an hour while being legitimately enjoyable is almost an art. If CI and Deck 13 can take up some room in the house that From Software built with Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls (and to grander extent, King’s Field), then we, my friends, can only stand to benefit.

Until then, I will continue with my Dark Souls obsession.
