FIFA 14: New Features

Following the announcement, late last night, that FIFA 14 was in the works, EA has revealed information about some of the new features coming to the FIFA franchise.

The new gameplay features will focus on building up play through midfield, dictating the tempo of a match and creating incredible finishes to shots. Here’s some information about a few new mechanics.

Pure Shot:

Pure Shot has been designed to give players the intelligence to adjust their stride and approach angle to find the best position for scoring. Pure Shot gives players the ability to shoot while off balanced or rushed. Pure Shot will depend on where the player is on the field, and how the ball is delivered to their feet. As you can see in the video below, instead of skipping when the player gets to the ball, like in FIFA 13, the player will take a few smaller shuffles that allow him to strike the ball more realistically.

Real Ball Physics:

Real Ball Physics will ensure the trajectory of the ball behaves like it would in real life. In the video below, you can see the ball reacting just like it would in real life if the same shot was taken. Real ball physics means cross bar challenges can be taken to a whole new level.

Protect the Ball:

Like we mentioned earlier, protect the ball will allow players to dictate the tempo of a match. Protect the ball is expected to allow players to fend off (legally of course) and block opponents from the ball while running at any speed. EA has used examples to show how Protect the Ball will work, “when a ball carrier is being pulled while advancing, they will be able to counter this by stepping in front of the defender and using their body to shield the ball. With the ball at their feet, players will be able to step into the opposition and hold them off to maintain possession and make a pass.”

Protect the Ball gives players the ability to fight for position prior to receiving the ball. EA provides another in-game example, “Picture a striker at the top of the box waiting for an incoming ball from a midfielder; he will now be able to win that space, receive the ball with his back to the goal, and then turn defenders to create opportunities.”

Better Teammate Intelligence:

EA Canada is taking its AI attacking intelligence from FIFA 13 and improving it. In FIFA 13, attackers were able to work out when they should make a run for that perfect through ball. Now, the intelligent AI works all over the pitch. Defenders will recognise when to provide support and win back the ball, and attackers will have new ways to beat their opponents by making space for themselves and managing their pace.

Apart from gameplay mechanics, FIFA 14 also has some “game-changing” innovations to Career Mode. The Global Scouting Network plans to bring the world of professional scouting to life.

FIFA 14 will feature changes to FIFA Ultimate Team, “multiple new features and benefits to EA SPORTS Football Club,” and more than 500 officially licensed clubs.

FIFA 14 will be released later this year on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. If past years are any indication, expect the game out around September or October. No word on next-Gen, but we will update you if we find out.
