Developers Didn’t Know About PS4’s 8GB RAM Until Announcement

Sony hadn’t revealed to developers using the PlayStation 4 that the console sported a generous 8GB of RAM.

In an interview with, Just Add Water’s CEO Stewart Gilray spoke of the studio’s pleasant surprise when PlayStation 4’s lead architect Mark Cerny revealed the 8GB of DDR5 RAM.

“We were told [PS4] was 4GB originally and we first knew it had 8GBs when Mark said at the event’s stage ‘And it has 8GB of memory.’ We’d had kits at that point for a good while.”

With Just Add Water constituting as a third party developer, Gilray notes his suspicion of the first party studios such as Naughty Dog and Guerilla were likely the only ones who knew of the PS4’s real memory capabilities. “I think most third-parties, if not all third-parties were like, ‘Yeah, 4GB, awesome, can’t wait.'”

Gilray explains “Because it’s [DDR5 memory] so fast you don’t have to have everything there at once. You can swap it in and out instantly, effectively. But when they said it was 8GB it was like ‘Ooookay.'”

PlayStation 4 is set to release sometime later this year in at least one territory. Last week, a report suggested Sony was gearing up for another big PS4 event either later this month or in May. Whether the event goes ahead or not, expect to see more of the console at E3 2013.
