AA’s Marvel NOW! Wave 2 Picks
There are already plans for a Marvel NOW! Wave 2. A new wave of titles that will generate the same amount of excitement amongst retailers and fans that the first wave did. From “Uncanny Avengers” to “Thanos Rising,” Marvel NOW! has been a hit, and we’re far from done. Look for exciting new series, starting in July and carrying through next year. Today AA gives you our predictions for what he hope to see come from this second wave of series.

Cloak and Dagger

Last we saw the heroic duo, Dagger was attending college classes as an attempt to normalize her life. Cloak was starting to have contradicting views as he acknowledges them as special because he wanted them to work as heroes and use their powers for good like the Avengers. Though, after Mister Negative hears of a prophecy that he destined to be killed by Dagger, he kidnaps Dagger and corrupts her with his negative touch. Her powers were changed, and now they are working through the Dark Force. Similar to Cloak, she gets the “hunger” for light and starts dying from the lack of it. Cloak then pleaded with Mister Negative to give him the touch. He agrees, altering Cloak’s abilities to be powered by light. Cloak feeds Dagger his light, causing an explosion. In the aftermath it is revealed that Dagger now has Cloak’s original powers, and Cloak has Dagger’s. That’s where we left off and hopefully this story picks up from there and lasts longer than their recent runs.

The Runaways

Marvel has continuously  teased fans with multiple appearances from them. This includes appearances in Dark Wolverine as they help Wolverine’s son, Daken, stop the last and forgotten member of the Pride. They also appeared in Avenger’s Academy to rescue Old Lace (Chase’s Dinosaur) from their care. And now they(Just Nico and Chase) are put into a new book called Avengers Arena, where they are forced to fight to the death with other young heroes. As good as the book is, it’s not fair to Runaways fans who want more from them and to see the whole team and not two of them put into a situation where they can be killed off. If they survive Arcades sick games they deserve a series that does their progress justice.

X-Factor was moving slow at first with the addition of Polaris and Havok(temporarily). But as of recently with the re-emergence of Tier, the story has picked up once again and has been very exciting since. It shows that X-Factor is an X-Men title that still has steam being one of the more underrated of the rest. Hopefully with the conclusion of this next arc we can get a new story that refreshes the series or maybe gives it the push it needs for attention.

This choice is for the most part based off the film to come, but Ant Man is an underrated hero. He isn’t taken very seriously by a wide audience and that doesn’t do much for him being the hero that he is. As a founding member of the Avengers, creator of Ultron, and one of the smartest on Earth, there is a lot that can be done with his character to bring more respect to who he is because he has a lot to offer to the Marvel Universe.

Black Panther

Black Panther has had a great solo series when he was Daredevil’s replacement defending Hells Kitchen, New York. Since then after losing his Queen, Storm, and almost losing Wakanda to a Phoenix possessed Namor, there is plenty of room to lead Black Panther into a new chapter of his life. He has a lot to deal with and a lot of development that can be portrayed well if they take the time to show how all the recent events have affected him.

Doctor Doom

An odd choice, but we don’t have many stories that are surrounding villains and it  would be a great change in pace to break the mold with one of the best. Doctor Doom is a man of motives and hidden agendas, what better way to show the world how much of a threat he really is and why you should not trifle with him than to give him his own series?

And stay tuned!

  1. I would love a new Cloak and Dagger series, written by Nick Spencer, and picking up from the Spider-Island mini. Spencer clearly has a love of the characters, and so do I, so it’d be amazing.

But it won’t happen. They just don’t sell.

Runaways is doubtful. It’s another book that never had great sales. They have a very dedicated fan base, but not a large one. And while it may not be fair to Runaways fans, Marvel isn’t in the business of fairness.

X-Factor will continue being X-Factor as long as PAD writes it. And if PAD leaves, it will likely cease to exist. It’s his book, and Marvel seems inclined to let him do whatever he damned well wants on it. It’s a wise choice.

Ant-Man is likely, with the upcoming movie. The only question is which Ant-Man they’ll go with. Pym is likely if the Ant-Man movie focuses on him. But if it focuses on Lang, then it’ll be about him. Though I guess he’s already in FF.

Black Panther’s appearing in New Avengers. I think that’ll be his book.

    A Doom book is doubtful.

    • Aside: Pym will be appearing in Avengers AI, alongside the Vision, Victor Mancha, and a Doombot, after Age of Ultron. So Pym is at least getting a team book. And with Victor Mancha showing up, the odds of a new volume of Runaways is looking increasingly unlikely. Marvel seems to have decided to split the team up.
