PlayStation 4 Rumours In The Wake Of PS4 Teaser

With Thursday’s reveal of the PlayStation teaser trailer widely speculated to be the PlayStation 4 reveal, an influx of rumours surrounding the announcement and Sony’s next-generation console have arisen.

Sources remaining anonymous have told The Wall Street Journal and Polygon that the event on the 20th of February 2013 will definitely be the announcement of the PlayStation 4. Whilst that seems the most plausible rumour, the same sources say that Sony is planning to release the PS4 by the end of the year. This year, 2013.The same source also revealed that Sony is going to have more of an emphasis on social interaction as well as gaming with the new console. The Wall Street Journal notes “[the PS4] is more focused this time on the changes in how users interact with the machine”.

Edge Online have revealed that the PlayStation 4 is planned to see a release by the end of 2013 in both the United States and Japan. Also according to Edge, Europe will see an early 2014 release date due to “complexities” in distributing the console around Europe. Fitting in with previous rumours, Sony will be using a redesigned controller. Earlier in the month, a rumour from CVG revealed that Sony plans to do away with the DualShock controller that has been with the PlayStation brand for the last 16 years. The system itself “will ship with a redesigned controller which is the same size as an existing DualShock but features a small touchpad in place of the existing Select, Start and PS buttons. The tech is based on [the] Vita’s rear touchpad, and is similarly responsive in use.”

As well as the touchpad, the newly designed controller will have a Share button that will allow players to “launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online.” This new feature will apparently be able to “continually record the most recent 15 minutes of on screen action” which players can use to put online presumably for walkthrough videos and other such content.

According to Egde, a new PlayStation Eye is also in development that will still work with the current PlayStation Move which will be available at launch but it’s unknown whether it will be bundled with the system.

Edge’s source also revealed that Sony’s next console is going to be more powerful that the next console from Microsoft.

Of course, none of this is official but the rumours are indeed very interesting aspects to consider. Analog Addiction will be watching the PlayStation meeting on the 20th of February to make sure that you’re all up to speed.
