Kaz Hirai Comments On Vita Sales So Far

In regards to the current state of the PlayStation Vita, Sony CEO has commented on the handhelds slowing sales in the past year.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Hirai described the Vita’s sales as being “on the low end of what we expected” but reaffirming that the PlayStation Vita’s long term sales figures are what is the most important factor. Hirai noted that for him, it takes 5-10 years until he determines whether or not it is a success.

During the Black Friday retail period, the PlayStation Vita did pretty well with sales of over 150,000 units sold during the Black Friday period. Hirai said that the PS Vita sales were “pretty much” in accordance with Sony’s expectations since Sony had lowered their estimated revenue for the year. Hirai also recognised that Sony is losing money in various departments including the Vita brand. Hirai said the solution to this was that they “need to stop the bleeding first” before they can think about what brands they need to get rid of.

The PlayStation brand is doing well for the most part however. Black Friday saw a further 500,000 PlayStation 3 units sold. It was also announced late last year that the PlayStation 3 had officially caught up to its rival, the Xbox 360 with sales figures of 70 million worldwide.
