A New PlayStation Controller?

A new design of the PlayStation controller may be on the way.

A new patent published by Sony seems to out the existence of a hybrid controller called “Hybrid Separable Motion Controller”. It was published on November the 29th but was originally filed during May 2011.

Blueprints for the controller show it to be separable from the middle using a breaking in half motion. From the drawings, it’s apparent that the controller is a hybrid of Sony’s Dualshock and the PlayStation Move. Components such as a magnetometer and an accelerometer. Support for vibration will also be present as well as a new feature, an embedded speaker in the controller.

The PlayStation Eye is also suggested to be compulsory for the controller. Game being controlled by the device will be able to tell when the controller is split. However, it is unclear exactly whether this will be used for the PlayStation 3 or the inevitable PlayStation 4. Perhaps it will exist for both is Sony continues using Move for the next-gen.

Naturally, Sony has not yet officially announced this new controller just yet.
